From Work Academy to Assistant Site Manager

Strengthening communities and investing in the local workforce is a key commitment from IM Properties as we look to use our projects, sites and supply chain to connect need with opportunity and ensure we are leveraging our investment to the greatest effect.

Jehan Gomes-Luis is an Assistant Site Manager at Mercia Park.  Her career in construction began just two years ago through our first Sector-Based Work Academy at our Hinckley Park scheme that delivered fast track training to job seekers living in the vicinity of our developments.

Working alongside trusted suppliers who are equally committed to employment and skills, we are proud to be assisting in educating a new generation of workforce to take the construction industry forward.

Here’s Jehan’s story…

A chance to join a growing industry

In April 2019 I was an unemployed single mum of two, keen to find a new long-term career.

I had some previous experience in construction and was delighted when I was accepted on the Groundworks and Health & Safety course being delivered by IM Properties, Winvic Construction, North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College, Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council, and a groundworks subcontractor.

I thoroughly enjoyed the course which included classroom sessions and on-site training with Winvic at IM Properties’ Hinckley Park development.  By the end of the course, I had obtained my CSCS card, an employability certificate and a City and Guilds Level 1 in Health & Safety.

Educated and employed

Health and Safety was an area that had particularly sparked my interest during the training course.  I was encouraged to apply for a COVID Marshall role with Winvic at Hinckley Park.  The aptitude and enthusiasm I had demonstrated during the training course had already impressed Winvic and I was on site in my new job a week later!

Championing potential

When the COVID Marshall role came to an end, Winvic championed me in finding my next role within the company.  Its partnership with IM Properties led to an interview and job offer to become Assistant Health & Safety Adviser at Mercia Park in Leicestershire. Since starting here, I’ve gained even more qualifications and I have now become Assistant Site Manager and I’m currently undertaking distance learning courses with the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health.

Looking to the future

My journey demonstrates how IM Properties and Winvic’s commitment to investing in communities can make a difference locally. My life has been completely transformed by the opportunities that the Work Academy provided, not just in developing my career but also in supporting me as a single parent juggling work and children.

I am proud to be employed in an industry that I love, for a company that values me as an employee, and in a role where I am making a positive contribution to the future of my local community.
