Award for apartment scheme which is cut above the rest

IM Properties and Legal & General have been recognised for going above and beyond, creating a new 220 apartment Build to Rent scheme in Newhall Square in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter.

The Whitmore Collection won Apartment and Development of the Year at the virtual Midlands Insider Residential Property Awards 2020 in what the judges said was:

“An exceptional project that undersold itself. Modern and with plenty of public space that used the canal on the site to its best advantage.”

The eight-storey residential development, opposite the Assay Office, was the second phase of a masterplan focused around the former Whitmore-Arm canal.

The building seamlessly integrates and wraps two new-build blocks around two refurbished historic buildings, including a former button factory to create 1 and 2 bedroom homes and 3 bed townhouses and a Grade II listed iron foundry to create four exclusive loft-style apartments.

Jason Jasper, project director for IM Properties said: “This was a very complex scheme and a major undertaking from both a technical and creative perspective to retain the unique period and design features of the buildings and blend them with the high-quality contemporary specification of the apartments, with great attention to detail.

“A carefully chosen palette of masonry, glass and dark metal was selected to tastefully reflect and enhance the existing listed features and a big emphasis was placed on the quality public spaces and amenities to create a sense of community.”

Inset balconies allow for views over the canal and a new courtyard and large public square with a water feature incorporating a shallow pool and fountain making reference to the Whitmore-Arm. Filled in during the 1950s, it is now a stunning hidden gem in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter.

Jason continued,” I’m extremely proud of what IM Properties’ in-house project delivery team has delivered in partnership with a trusted and highly skilled team of professionals and contractors, whose dedication and commitment at all times was unwavering whilst creating this exceptional scheme.

“The apartments offer a living experience beyond what most build to rent apartments currently offer and with the added benefits of a boutique-style members clubhouse and gym”

Only minutes’ walk away from Birmingham’s major transport links and commercial district, the Whitmore Collection reached final completion in April 2020 and is now being marketed by Legal & General.

Legal & General said: “We’re extremely proud of the Whitmore Collection – it’s a stand-out Build to Rent offering, exemplary of the hard work shown by all involved in the development process. A big thank you to the IM Properties team who have been instrumental in delivering a scheme of such high standard”
